A lot of Christians are confused about this because they equate “commandments: to “old covenant laws” that’s not true at all….
John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Ever heard of this phrase? Were you ever told that Christians must keep the Ten Commandments?
Throughout Church History, there has always been confusion about the “Big Ten” like some people would say or in plain words the Ten Commandments. Jesus said multiple times “if you keep my commandments”. What did Jesus mean? In order to answer this question, we have to look at scripture. Let the Bible interpret the Bible. Scripture will never contradict itself and we have to rightly divide the word. What is rightly dividing the Word? BC/AD – The Old Covenant and the New Covenant. Christians have nothing to do with the Law.
Galatians 3:12 However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, “He who practices them shall live by them. “
The Whole “Law” and not certain parts.
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not [any longer] exert dominion over you, since now you are not under Law [as slaves], but under grace [as subjects of God’s favor and mercy].
Was Jesus referring back to the Old Covenant when He said to keep my Commandments?
Was Jesus referring back to the Big Ten…..thou shall not thou shall not?
No, my friend, Jesus was not referring to the big 10 or the Law at all. Jesus was referring to His commandments when He was present here on earth.
“Flirting with Moses is cheating on Jesus” Who are you married too? Jesus or Moses… Romans 7
Let us look at a few of Jesus’ commandments
Love One Another”
John 15:12 KJV.”My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you,”
Believe in Me
John 6:29 Jesus replied, This is the work (service) that God asks of you: that you believe in the One Whom He has sent [that you cleave to, trust, rely on, and have faith in His Messenger].
Go and Make Disciples of All Nations, Baptizing Them”
Matt 28:19-20 NIV.”Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age,”
Galatians 3:12 But keeping the law does not require faith, but self-effort. For the law teaches,
“If you practice the principles of law, you must follow all of them.
The Law cannot be divided and be made “keepable”
Jesus would have contradicted Himself by saying keep my commandments and meant the Ten Commandments as He knew He came to fulfill the Law! When The Bible speaks of the Law it is referring to the Law of Moses which can be divided into the following segments
Three kinds of Law which make up the Law:
Ceremonial Law of rituals: does and don’ts, traditions, holidays, foods, ceremonial washings, and sacrifices, ceremonial tradition
The Law written on Tablets of Stone: The Ten Commandments
The Law of Demands: deadlines, time-frames, quotas, others expectations of us, natural law
Scripture is clear that if we are under the Law we are to keep it all which is in total is 613 commandments
James 2:11 For whosoever keeps the Law [as a] whole but stumbles and offends in one [single instance] has become guilty of [breaking] all of it.
Can you see the picture yet?
When you under the Law, you cannot pick and choose what you like! Either you are under the complete Law, and if you are, it will bring you to the END OF YOURSELF! The Law must be kept and adhered to 100%! God’s standard and not man’s standard. The Pharisees made the Law keepable and Jesus brought it back to God’s standard. You break one Law you guilty of breaking all. Jesus said if you look at a lady lustfully, pluck your eye out. Jesus said if you tempted to steal cut your handoff. If we are honest a Sunday morning service would rather be “let’s clap our stumps together”. No one can boast that they have never done this. Jesus brought the Law back to God’s standard. Keep the Law and you are blessed. You break one Law you are cursed
The Law was made obsolete and this includes the famous BIG TEN!
Hebrews 8:12-13 For I will demonstrate my mercy to them and will forgive their evil deeds, and never remember again their sins. This proves that by establishing this new covenant the first is now obsolete, ready to expire, and about to disappear.
Romans 7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, that we might bear fruit for God.
I conclude that Jesus commandments are not the Ten Commandments as it would contradict Pauls letters and many other writings
Galatians 1:6-8 6 I am shocked over how quickly you have deserted the grace gospel and strayed away from Christ who called you to Himself by His loving mercy. I’m frankly astounded that you now embrace a distorted gospel of salvation by works!
7 That is a fake “gospel” that is simply not true! There is only one gospel—the grace gospel! Yet you have allowed those who mingle law with Christ’s grace to confuse you with lies.
8 Anyone who comes to you with a different message than the grace gospel that you have received will have the curse of God come upon them! For even if we or an angel
appeared before you, to give you a different gospel than what we have already proclaimed, God’s curse will be upon them!
